How to make a church seating chart

  1. Draw the pews. Start from the example (twelve pews of eight on each side of the aisle) and set the pews and places to match your church.
  2. Add the chancel and doors. Place the chancel or altar, pulpit, doors and any accessible spaces.
  3. Add the people. Paste the list of families or guests, with everyone in a family sharing a group.
  4. Reserve pews. Tag the families who need the front pews (a baptism, a confirmation, the bereaved family) and a rule keeps them there.
  5. Print for the ushers. Download the PDF: the pews with names and an alphabetical list.

The chart above is an Easter service with 140 people: twelve pews of eight on each side of the center aisle, facing the chancel. Each family sits together, and the front pews are reserved for this week’s baptism families. Pews 10 to 12 are free. Press Use this layout to keep the pews and clear the example names.

When a church needs a seating chart

  • Weddings: each family on its side, parents in the front pews.
  • Funerals: the family in the front pews, pallbearers and readers on the aisle.
  • Baptisms, confirmations and first communions: the families of those taking part near the front.
  • Christmas, Easter and concerts: reserved pews for the choir, musicians, the elderly and families with young children.

Pews, places and accessibility

Allow about 18 to 22 inches (45 to 55 cm) per person in a pew. Name the pews the way your ushers say them (L1 and R1, or 1 to 24). Keep places at the end of a pew, near a door, for wheelchair users and anyone who may need to step out, and lock them so they stay free. The chart is drawn to scale, so you can check the aisle width.

For the ushers

Download PDF prints the pews with names and an alphabetical list, so ushers can show each family to its pew. Reserved signs and name cards for the pews can come from the seating card maker. The list stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a church seating chart?

Add a row of places for each pew on each side of the aisle, name the pews (L1, R1… or numbers), and add the families. Smart arrange seats each family together; reserved families go to their pews.

How many people fit in a church pew?

Allow about 18 to 22 inches (45 to 55 cm) per person. A 12-foot pew seats about 7 or 8 adults; families with small children fit more.

Who sits in the front pews?

Usually the families at the center of the service: the couple’s families at a wedding, the bereaved family at a funeral, the families of those being baptized or confirmed.

Can I number the pews and seats?

Yes. Name each pew (for example L1 and R1, or 1 to 24), and click a pew to show seat numbers. The plan prints with the names you use.

Does it work for a wedding or a funeral in church?

Yes. The wedding ceremony seating chart has each family on its side of the aisle, and reserved front pews work the same way for a funeral. See the wedding ceremony seating chart.

Is there a church seating chart template?

Yes. Download the PDFs below, with names or blank pews, or press Use this layout above to keep the pews and add your own list.
