How to make a classroom floor plan

  1. Choose your starting room. Try Classroom layout or Preschool layout, then choose Use this layout to keep your own copy. Start blank gives you an empty room. Neither example needs student names.
  2. Enter the measured room size. Open Set up classroom and enter Room width and Room depth in centimetres. Keep current furniture changes the boundary without moving or resizing the objects already in it.
  3. Build a furniture grid. Choose single desks, pairs or four-place groups, then set rows, columns and gaps. Choose Append grid or the explicit Replace desks, pairs and pods action. Review the new seating-place count before applying.
  4. Add the rest of the room. Use Add area/furniture for labelled storage or activity areas. Edit their dimensions and positions. Check the room boundary and review objects through the Room item list.
  5. Save and print the floor plan. Use Print floor plan for a Letter or A4 PDF. Keep the room outline and dimensions when useful. Download a plan file as an editable backup before moving to another device.

Start with the room’s measurements

The classroom example opens with 30 single desks in six columns and five rows, inside an 1100 × 1020 cm room. These are editable example dimensions. Measure your own room and furniture before using the drawing to plan a move. Include the board, teacher desk, door and storage you need to keep in view.

Changing the room boundary does not shrink or reposition existing objects. If something extends outside, the warning identifies items to review. Select a desk to adjust its size or position. A new grid must fit inside the measured room, including its drawn chairs; the builder will not silently enlarge the room to make it fit.

Use rows, pairs or groups

Set rows, columns and horizontal or vertical gaps to build several furniture items together. Gaps describe the space between desk edges in the drawing. Check the actual chairs, door access and routes in your room before moving furniture.

Append grid keeps your existing work. Replace desks, pairs and pods removes those eligible items while keeping other room objects. Occupied, locked or rule-referenced targets block replacement, including a locked empty chair. The applied setup is one Undo. For names and seating rules afterward, use the classroom seating chart generator.

A preschool classroom floor plan creator

The preschool example starts with three four-place pods in a 900 × 700 cm room. Reading rug, Blocks, Art and Storage are labelled rectangles you can resize and move. They have no seats or student assignments. Rename them or add your own areas to describe the room you actually use.

Head Start’s classroom environment guidance invites educators to sketch their room and review traffic patterns, boundaries and sightlines. Its interest areas depend on the curriculum. Use this flexible drawing as a starting point for that review; it does not check supervision, building requirements or licensed capacity.

Edit without relying on dragging

Select an item to change its label, size, location or rotation in Details. Open Room item list to find boards, doors and areas and use Edit to reach the same controls by keyboard. Duplicate a repeated item or delete an unwanted one, then use Undo if you change your mind. For more layout ideas, see the classroom seating arrangements guide.

Print and keep an editable copy

Print floor plan creates a furniture-only PDF without requiring names or empty roster lists. The room-outline option includes the full rectangular boundary and dimension labels. Letter and A4 fit the drawing to the page; the centimetre labels describe saved measurements, not a scale you can measure on the print. SVG and PNG provide image copies of the layout.

Compare the classroom samples on Letter or A4, and the preschool samples on Letter or A4. Check a sample sheet before sharing the final plan.

Your room and any later student list stay in your browser. My plans lets you return to your work; a downloaded plan file preserves an editable copy of the furniture, room settings and any assignments. PDF and image files are snapshots for printing or sharing, not editable plan backups.

Frequently asked questions

Is this free classroom floor plan software?

Yes. You can draw the layout, save a plan file and export the floor plan for free in your browser. No account or desktop software installation is required.

Can I make the layout before adding students?

Yes. Both layout examples contain zero people. The default classroom has 30 desks; the preschool example has 12 seating places. Print the furniture and room without creating a student list.

How do I set my classroom’s actual size?

Open Set up classroom and enter the width and depth in centimetres. Select furniture to edit its measured size. The saved dimensions describe your drawing; the printed image is fit to the page, not an architectural scale plan.

Can I choose rows, pairs or groups?

Yes. Furniture offers single desks, two-place pairs and four-place groups. Rows and columns control the number of items; the dialog shows the resulting seating places. Empty places do not invent students or assignments.

Can I plan a preschool classroom?

Use Preschool layout, then edit its pods and labelled activity areas to match your room. Area rectangles do not add seats. The example count does not establish licensed occupancy, suitable furniture sizes or safe supervision.

Will replacing desks delete my students or locks?

Replacement is blocked if a target desk, pair or pod has an assigned person, any locked chair or a rule reference. Append preserves existing furniture. Resolve protected items deliberately; Undo restores an applied room setup.

Can I print the full room on Letter or A4?

Yes. Print floor plan includes the room when the outline option is enabled, with saved width and depth labels. Choose Letter or A4. Its fit-to-page drawing is useful for review, but distances measured on the paper are not real-room distances.

Will my layout save on another device?

Autosave and My plans keep work in this browser. To move it, download a plan file and open that file on the other device. Keep a backup: clearing browser storage can remove local plans. There is no account sync.
