How to draw random seats

  1. Set up the tables. Start from the poker example (five tables of 9) or mahjong (eight tables of 4), and set your number of tables and seats.
  2. Add the players. Paste the players’ names, one per line.
  3. Draw the seats. Press Shuffle: every player gets a random table and seat. Press it again for a new draw.
  4. Balance as players leave. Remove eliminated players and move others by dragging, or shuffle the remaining field.
  5. Post the draw. Download the seat list as a PDF, sorted by name, or show it on a screen.

The chart above is a poker tournament: 45 players at five tables of 9. Press Shuffle to draw every seat at random. Switch to Mahjong for 32 players at eight tables of 4. Press Use this layout to keep the tables and add your own players.

A fair seat draw

A random draw stops players picking their tables or sitting with friends. Shuffle reassigns the whole field at once: every player is equally likely to get any seat. Print the seat list sorted by name for the tournament desk, or put it on a screen.

Balancing tables

As players are eliminated, keep table sizes within one of each other: remove the eliminated players, then drag a player from the fullest table to the shortest. To break a table, drag its players to empty seats elsewhere, or shuffle the remaining field for a fresh draw.

Mahjong seating

Mahjong is played four to a table. For a club night, Shuffle draws the tables; at each table, players can still draw wind tiles to decide East, South, West and North. For random groups without tables, try the random group generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I draw random seats for a poker tournament?

Add the tables and the players, then press Shuffle. Every player gets a random table and seat; the alphabetical list in the PDF tells each one where to sit.

Is the draw random?

Yes. Each press shuffles the whole field, so every player is equally likely to get any seat, and nobody chooses their neighbours.

How do I balance tables when players are eliminated?

Remove the eliminated players and drag players from the fullest table to empty seats at the shortest one, or press Shuffle on the remaining players to re-draw every seat.

How are seats decided in mahjong?

Traditionally by drawing wind tiles for East, South, West and North. For a club night with several tables, Shuffle draws the tables and seats; players can still draw winds at their table.

Can I keep two players apart?

Yes. Add a keep-apart rule, for example for two players from the same home game, and use Smart arrange instead of Shuffle.

Is there a poker seating chart template?

Yes. Download the PDFs below for poker and mahjong, or press Use this layout above to keep the tables and add your players.
